Minimize your risk of credit card fraud

Contact Visa and report your card stolen at 866-820-1039 or ext. 1595.
If you recognize an unauthorized transaction, contact MECU immediately. Please call 800-231-5262 or send a secure message through Online or Mobile Banking.
Attend a MECU Shred event and shred documents with personal identifying information.
Review receipts, credit card and bank statements to be able to report any fraud right away.
Make sure you verify that a website is authentic before making a purchase. A secure URL should begin with “https” rather than “http.” The “s” in “https” stands for secure, which indicates that the site is using a Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) Certificate.

If you have a card with a magnetic strip, use a strong magnet to demagnetize the strip on the back of the card. Chips are a bit tougher to neutralize. You can cut chips with a pair of scissors, or even break them apart with a hammer.

Next, cut the card into at least three pieces. If you're having trouble cutting through the plastic, try bending it back and forth a few times to weaken it, then cut along the bend.

Destroying documents with your personal information reduces the likelihood of becoming an identity theft victim.
Scammers can claim to be from your card issuer or bank and ask for personal information. Do not provide credit card information to representatives who call you unexpectedly.

MECU will never contact you by phone, email or text message to ask for personal information. We will only ask you to provide this information to verify your identity when you call us directly.
As a rule of thumb, exercise awareness anytime you’re using a public pay station or when your card leaves your sight. Whenever possible, choose the pump closest to the building. They’re closest to employees and the least likely to have been tampered with. Avoid using a debit card, if possible. Should you be forced to use debit, run it as a credit card so you don’t have to enter your PIN.
Banking with MECU Credit Union in Maryland means belonging to a local financial institution that invests in the Baltimore community and offers competitive rates on credit cards and other personal lending products.

How Do I Start A MECU Credit Card Balance Transfer?

Existing MECU Visa Card Holder?

If you are an existing MECU cardholder, you can complete a balance transfer request by:

  • Logging into MECU Online Banking and selecting the Visa Credit Card link located in your loan accounts section, or
  • Call Cardholder Services: 866-820-3867
  • To report a lost or stolen card call: 866-820-1039

Not Yet A MECU Visa Card Holder?

If you are not currently a MECU cardholder, you can start the balance transfer process by applying for a new MECU Visa Credit Card.

It feels good to be out of the big banks and be with a local credit union.
