Community Outreach

MECU is dedicated to making Baltimore a better place to live.


For years, MECU has been demonstrating its commitment to the community by supporting non-profit agencies in their quest to improve the quality of life for residents of our city. MECU team members regularly volunteer their time to work on all sorts of initiatives from fundraising to working with the less fortunate to offering financial education and advice. Read below to see examples of our involvement, or check out our calendar for upcoming events and workshops.

Teachers Are Heroes (September - June)

MECU sponsors the Teachers are Heroes program with ABC2 News. Every month during the school year, we recognize one teacher who had been nominated by a parent, student or other teachers for being exceptional. To see past award winners go to: http://www.abc2news.com/teachersareheroes

Neighborhood Event Grants (May)

For 5 years, MECU has funded the Neighborhood Event Grants for Baltimore City neighborhoods. Working with the Baltimore Office of Promotion and the Arts and the Baltimore City Department of Housing and Community Development, MECU provided grants to 103 neighborhoods for 2016. On May 7, a workshop was help at MECU’s headquarters for all the grantees.

Money Power Day (April)

On April 2, lots of MECU volunteers joined with volunteers from other financial institutions and non-profits to host Money Power Day, a free financial education event. There were workshops, exhibits and one on one counseling such as the Credit Café. MECU hosted the Youth Zone to help kids develop their money skills early.

Meals on Wheels (March)

On March 9, MECU volunteers went to Meals on Wheels and packed:

  • 2,000 hot meals
  • 1,500 cold meals
  • 1,500 accessory trays
  • 800 applesauce cups
  • 800 bread bags

Neighborhood Event Grants (February)

As part of MECU’s continuing commitment to our community, community groups (501c3) in Baltimore City are invited to apply for grants up to $1,000 to help develop events for their organization. Each year, the program awards cash grants to Baltimore neighborhood associations and community-based non-profit organizations for the purpose of producing special events. Maryland Food Bank (January)

On January 8, a group of MECU team members volunteered at the Maryland Food Bank. We really enjoy getting into the community and giving a helping hand.
