Bert J. Hash Jr., CEO of MECU of Baltimore to Retire

Martin Selected as New CEO

April 14, 2014, Baltimore, MD --- Bert J. Hash Jr., President and CEO of MECU of Baltimore Inc. announced his retirement from the credit union in June 2014 after serving in this position for over 17 years. Before joining MECU, Hash worked at Equitable Bank and Provident Bank of Maryland.

Hash was responsible for MECU growing from one branch to 11 branches around the Baltimore metropolitan area, as well as its assets growing from $400 million to over $1.3 billion and membership growing to over 106,000.

It was during Hash’s tenure that MECU developed a strong culture of giving back to the community. MECU team members regularly volunteer with non-profits in the community and Board members often join them. Under Hash’s leadership, MECU has become one of the top credit unions in the country and been recognized for its commitment to the community through numerous awards.

After a nation-wide search, the MECU Board of Directors selected Gary J. Martin, SVP and Chief Lending Officer of MECU to serve as the next President and CEO. Martin joined MECU in 1972 as a loan officer.

“The Board had a number of specific qualities they wanted in the new CEO,” said Herman Williams, Jr. Chairman of the Board of Directors at MECU. “We were looking for vision and continued implementation of new technology affecting financial services, but of utmost importance to the entire Board was a commitment to MECU’s culture of giving back to the community.

“The Board felt that Gary Martin brought together all these qualities,” continued Williams. “I know I speak for all of my colleagues on the MECU Board when I say that we are looking forward to working with Gary as we ensure that MECU continues serving our growing membership with high quality financial services.”

Heartbleed Bug: Important Information
MECU is protected from Heartbleed. Other details you need to know

Earlier this week, Internet security experts identified a potential vulnerability in an encryption software used globally throughout the Internet. You may have seen or read stories about the Heartbleed bug.

MECU has reviewed our internal systems and can confirm that this potential vulnerability does not exist on our system and there are no known or suspected vulnerabilities on our systems.

Additionally, we are working with our business partners to ensure they have tested their systems and implemented any needed changes as well. MECU will continue to work with our partners to monitor this situation.

While there have been no accounts of hackers exploiting this vulnerability to date, as an added precaution, Internet security experts recommend that you:

• Change usernames and/or passwords for each of your online accounts (ie. online banking, investment banking, healthcare sites, gmail, yahoo, facebook, twitter, etc.)
• Monitor your accounts for suspicious activity

Changing the username for your MECU Online Banking account is quick and easy to do and gives you the added benefit of an easy-to-remember log in! Once you’ve logged in to Online Banking, simply click on the Administration tab, then click on Change Username, complete the form, and submit. It’s that easy.
