Community Outreach
MECU is dedicated to making Baltimore a better place to live.
For years, MECU has been demonstrating its commitment to the community by supporting non-profit agencies in their quest to improve the quality of life for residents of our city. MECU team members regularly volunteer their time to work on all sorts of initiatives from fundraising to working with the less fortunate to offering financial education and advice. Read below to see examples of our involvement, or check out our calendar for upcoming events and workshops.
EVENTS OF 2011
Financial Education Workshops
For several years, MECU has offered FREE educational workshops to its members and to the community. Our goal is to provide financial education to help empower and grow the Baltimore Community.
We offer a First Time Home Buyers Workshop to help prepare first time buyers for the process of applying for a loan and finding special incentives and grants. We also offer the Managing and Maintaining Good Credit Workshop which explains how and why you should create a budget, what creditors look for and steps you can take to help repair your credit.
Join us at one of our monthly workshops. Visit our events calendar for details on this month's workshop.
Harford Gardens Everybody's Birthday Celebration
Who doesn't love a birthday party? Everyone at MECU sure does and each year staff heads out to the Harford Gardens Nursing and Rehabilitation Center to celebrate each and everyone of the resident's birthday with a theme party.
This year, we took the party back to the 1950's with a Sock Hop. MECU staff danced and sang to songs of the 50's as this year entertainment to the residents. In their pink and black and poodle skirts, staff served Root Beer Floats and a genuinely good time for all. Residents received gifts and door prizes and even participated in a little Karaoke.
Port Discovery Field Trip
Each year MECU, sponsors a field trip to Port Discovery for each of its six elementary partners schools. Students from various grades spent the day learning and exploring the many levels of the children's museum. MECU staff helped chaperone the trip and provide guidance and support to the students throughout their fun-filled day.
Annual Book Drive
We partner with seven Baltimore City Elementary Schools to provide every student in every a book of their own to take home and read at the end of the school year. Our annual book drive started with Ft. Worthington Elementary School and has expanded as each of our branches adopted a school in their community. The MECU employees develop new skills to find books for the students in the different grade levels. They scour flea markets, yard sales and Goodwill shops. In addition, employees hold a flea market and a bake sale to help raise funds. MECU employees go to the schools to distribute the books and help students find one that will interest them.
Money Power Day
It was another successful event at this year's Money Power Day held at Polytechnic High School on Saturday, April 2nd. Participants from Baltimore and the surrounding areas stopped by the annual event to get valuable information on their finances.
MECU along with a number of other volunteers helped participants check their credit reports and get information on buying a home and starting a new small business. Children received Power Bucks for answering questions through out the day in which they could use to buy fun prizes.
