CONTINUING COMMITMENT TO THE COMMUNITY
MECU's commitment to the community is based on our Mission Statement -
To provide members with high quality financial services through sound management and innovation.
MECU team members volunteer their time to help non-profit agencies in our communities make life
better for people. MECU also works to help our members develop their financial knowledge through workshops.
Join us for one of the upcoming 2009 events to expand your knowledge and reach your financial dreams.
What's in Store for 2009!
This commitment continues in 2009. Here are just some of our efforts to reach out to our community this year.
 |
Each year, MECU hosts a Book Drive to make sure Baltimore City school students have a book of their very own to read over summer break. This year's Book Drive was a HUGE SUCCESS!! We collected 4,890 books in addition to the $1,138.05 raised from our internal flea market to benefit the Book Drive.
President and CEO, Bert Hash Jr., along with Chairman Herman Williams helped delight the children of MECU’s 7 adopted schools by assisting with the book delivery. |
 |
The annual Pee Wee Preakness was held on May 12th on Federal Hill. MECU, along with the Baltimore Office of Promotion and Arts was there to help the children from Baltimore area schools and day care centers jockey their "horses". The children enjoyed games and activities and a visit from Bob the Vid Kid and friends from Maryland Public Television (MPT).
|
 |
On Saturday March 21, MECU along with the Baltimore CASH Campaign and several community and financial
institutions partnered for the fourth annual MONEY POWER DAY. Residents from Baltimore and
surrounding areas
come to gain financial knowledge
and get helpful advice.
This one-day event featured exhibits, workshops, free tax preparation and a Youth Zone. These workshops are
designed to provide answers and resources for people to reach their financial goals.
The financial fitness event provided high-quality, professional, solutions-based services
and information in a friendly, positive and accessible environment. |
Maryland Public Television Telethon |
 |
Each year, MECU supports MPT by sending volunteers
to man the phones
and collect donations. The MPT Foundation supports public broadcasting
that provides educational material that contributes to our
community, outreach events and activities. |

Each year MECU teams up with the Salvation Army to participate in the Angel Tree
Network. MECU adopted 125 angels to provide gifts for area boys and girls who are less fortunate.
Gifts of all kinds have been brought in for MECU’s angels. From remote control cars and bikes to new coats and clothes, MECU staff went above and beyond to help make the holiday season more joyful.
The Angel Tree gifts decorated the Redwood Street Branch. An abundance of gifts were seen in the windows from Light Street along with a banner
showing how proud we were to help support the Angel Tree Network. |
| Student-Run Credit Union |
|
 |
MECU opened its first student-run credit union at the National Academy Foundation on Wednesday, October 8, 2008. A grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony was held at the school branch to kick-off its first day of business.
The National Academy Foundation is a Baltimore City high school located within Digital Harbor High School. As a school that provides career training in hospitality, tourism, finance and information technology, NAF was a perfect fit for MECU’s first student-run credit union.
The credit union is run by six students and supervised by a NAF teacher.
Students are responsible for conducting everyday transactions such as deposits and withdrawals as well as growing membership throughout the school. |
| Junior Achievement Biz Town |
|
 |
Each year MECU sponsors a local Baltimore City Elementary School to participate in Junior Achievment's Biz Town. Biz Town is a miniature town where students learn how to run a business, pay bills and manage money.
MECU assisted the fifth grade students from Cross Country Elementary on their very busy work day. From running a health clinic to keeping order in the Biz Town Community, the students learned very valuable "real life" experience. |
|
Although the weather was threatening, MECU’s 4th Annual Charity Cup Golf Tournament was a huge success! Over 120 golfers joined in for a little competition and a fun day of golf.
MECU raised $44,000 to benefit various local charities including MECU's 6 Baltimore City partner schools and the College Bound Foundation. |
Annual MECU Book Drive |
|
|
MECU Staff and the Book Drive Committee donated their time, money and books to the 2008 MECU Book Drive. A total of 3,730 books were donated to MECU’s partner schools.
Books were delivered to Cross Country Elementary and Fort Worthington on Friday June 6th.
The children at Cross Country Elementary got a special visit from Mr. Hash along with other MECU staff. On Monday, June 9th, our very own Chief Williams helped the students at Hamilton
Elementary pick out their very own book for the summer. More books were delivered to Samuel L. Coleridge Elementary and Yorkwood Elementary on Monday where the children were all smiles with their summer reading choice. |
| Sandtown Habitat for Humanity |
|
 |
MECU staff, along with a number of other volunteers helped to rehab the home on Baker Street at this year’s Sandtown Habitat for Humanity Blitz Week. Forty-seven MECU staff members volunteered a hard days work from June 24-26th. The back breaking work by MECU staff and other volunteers has helped to complete a home for its new owners. A few days of hard work for a dream of a lifetime. |
| AACUC Internships |
|
 |
The 2008 AACUC Internship Program provided college students with an opportunity to gain “hands on” experience within the credit union industry. The internship program placed applicants credit unions across the country in an effort to raise awareness of the credit union movement among young minorities. MECU along with schools, other credit unions and financial partners continue to be highly supportive of this excellent Internship Program. |
| Pee Wee Preakness |
|
 |
MECU participated in the annual Pee Wee Preakness on May 13th.
Children from Baltimore area schools, day care centers and recreation centers joined MECU and the Baltimore Office of Promotion and Arts in a Preakness race of their own.
MECU staff helped the little ones mount their horses and ride off to victory. There were plenty of games and activities for everyone including getting
Preakness day tattoos and making their own personal bracelets.

| Month of Caring-April |
|
