WHO CAN OPEN A MECU CHECKING ACCOUNT?

To open a checking account you must be at least 18 years of age and a member in good standing with a share savings account. You must also be at least 18 years of age to obtain any type of ATM or debit card.

An individual under 18 can be a joint owner of a MECU checking account provided the other joint owner is of legal age and a member in good standing.

To Open your MECU Checking Account Today - To get started just follow the attached instructions. And while you are opening your checking account, note on the form that you also want "PC access/internet banking" so you can check your account balance, transfer funds and more on line.

Your account may be established as an individual or a joint account. All accounts opened online must be in the same registration as the base share account. Accounts can also be opened in person at any one of the MECU branches. New accounts are verified through Qualifile, which is used by MECU to identify consumers in compliance with the U.S. Patriot Act.

Please wait to close any existing checking account until you receive your MECU checks. Your first order of free checks should arrive in about two weeks.

We even have an online calculator to help you keep your checkbook up to date.

ELECTRONIC STATEMENTS – For your convenience, MECU offers free electronic statements. With e-statements, you don't have to worry about misplacing your paper statements or if your statement would fall into the wrong hands. We warehouse your e- statements for you and you can retrieve them whenever you want. We even e-mail you telling you when your statement becomes ready for your viewing. Then you just sign into the online banking section of the MECU site to view / copy the statement. Now that's convenient.

MECU ATM OR VISA DEBIT CARD With your MECU ATM Card or VISA Debit Card, you can go to the STAR®, PLUS, and VISA networks and check your balance, transfer funds or withdraw cash from your MECU Checking or Share Savings accounts. You can also use your MECU VISA Debit Card to make purchases instead of writing a check.

ONLINE BANKING & TELEPHONE TELLER Check your balance, verify deposits and checks cleared, transfer funds and more. With the Telephone Teller or online banking through our web site, you can obtain information and do transactions 24-hours a day. There is no fee to use Telephone Teller or for online access and with self-enrollment, you can get your online banking PIN today.

OVERDRAFT PROTECTION – You can save the cost and embarrassment of a bounced check by arranging for the Preferred Credit Plan (PCP) overdraft protection on your Checking Account.

MAKING DEPOSITS TO YOUR MECU CHECKING ACCOUNT- You can deposit to your account several ways: in person, in the Deposit Express box in the lobby, ATM, by mail, or by savings-to-checking transfer. DIRECT DEPOSIT

You can "Direct Deposit" your net pay right into your MECU checking or share savings account. Direct Deposit is available to members receiving checks from: the City of Baltimore pay/retirement; State and Federal Government; Social Security; and employers which offer Direct Deposit or Automatic Clearing House (ACH) payments through the Federal Reserve.

Employers require that you sign up for Direct Deposit through their payroll department. For your convenience, here are Direct Deposit forms for the following:

PAYROLL DEDUCTION

With Payroll Deduction or Automatic Distribution, a portion of your pay is automatically deposited into your MECU savings account or used to make a payment to your MECU loan.

Payroll Deduction is available to employees/retirees of Baltimore City and other qualifying agencies. Automatic distribution is available to members who have Direct Deposit to MECU but are not on the City’s payroll deduction system.

Use a MECU Request to Change form to authorize or change payroll deductions; or to change address. Just complete and return to MECU.

ACH DIRECT PAYMENT

You can preauthorize periodic bills, such as utility, insurance and mortgage payments, to be made to other parties out of your MECU checking account by electronic funds transfer. This is called ACH Direct Payment. Contact the firm that is going to receive the payments to find out their procedure to initiate this service. You may be asked to provide MECU’s routing and transit number, which is: 25207646, check digit 8.
